CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Storey Gym was filled with students Tuesday morning, not for an expected basketball event, but for a different kind of competition.

“We have over 200 students that signed up and are here taking on the math competition today, and that just shows the enthusiasm and dedication the kids have in stem education in wanting to move forward in their mathematical careers,” Laramie County School District #1, Math Coordinator/Instructional Facilitator, Amy Kassel said.

The State of Wyoming holds its annual math contest at the beginning of the year. However, this year the state decided against holding the competition due to COVID restraints.

LCSD#1 says it was important to give it’s students an opportunity to showcase what they know in a timed, test taking format.

A student told Wyoming News Now, his pride and knowledge is the driving factor for him entering the competition.

“This means representing my family, my school and everyone that I know. I put the people I love first, so for the people I love I want to show them the skills I have in this competition,” Poder Secondary, student, Tennyson Smith said.

For the winners of the contest a potential scholarship is on the line to the college of their choice.
