Prep Athlete of the Week: Jake Rayl
East basketball and football player now a two-time Prep AOTW recipient
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - This week’s Prep Athlete of the Week is East Boys Basketball Guard Jake Rayl.
The is the second time that Jake has won the award this school year.
He was Wyoming News Now’s Prep Athlete of the Week on October 12th after he recorded six receptions, 160 receiving yards, three touchdowns, and an interception in a 41-18 win over Cheyenne Central in the fall.
He had a great performance to earn the award then and had a great weekend on the basketball court to earn the award now.
On Friday against #2 Thunder Basin, Jake scored 22 points and added five rebounds and two assists in a huge 65-61 victory over the Bolts at Storey Gym.
The senior followed that performance with a double-double the next day that featured 13 points and 10 assists in #4 East’s 76-58 win against Campbell County.
“I just noticed against Campbell County, we were just getting out and running a lot.,” Rayl said. “Every time I’d get a rebound or an outlet, I’d just look and there was someone open down the floor. And then another part of that was every time I kept hitting Graedyn [Buell], he kept hitting tough shots.”
Jake said that about half of his passes on Saturday were to his teammate Graedyn Buell.
Buell, ironically, was the quarterback passing Jake the ball during East’s 2020 4A State Championship run.
This is not a star and roll-playing side kick relationship though, these guys are both stars.
“[The two of us fit] because we’re both players that can distribute it and score,” Rayl said. “It’s fun because every game it just switches up [who scores more] and then some games it’s both of us, so it’s pretty fun.”
Jake said that after high school he would like to be a finance major and play basketball in college or attend the University of Wyoming.
Congratulations and good luck to Jake Rayl, 2x Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Week.
