CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Rep. Liz Cheney’s decision to vote to impeach former President Donald Trump has led to some of her Republican colleagues questioning the decision. This includes U.S. Congressman from Florida, Rep. Matt Gaetz, who will be speaking at the Wyoming State Capitol Building Thursday afternoon. In a call with media outlets earlier this week, Rep. Gaetz had this to say about his trip.

“I’ve got serious policy disagreements with Liz Cheney on matters of war and peace. She fashions herself as a foreign policy expert, but the foreign policy of Liz Cheney would have our country over deployed, overextended and diminished. So I intend to make that case as well, as we go back there and share a vision that hopefully inspires the great folks in Wyoming to do better when they have the opportunity to send another member of Congress to Washington.”

When asked about removing Rep. Cheney from her role as conference chair, Rep. Gaetz had this to say:

“Let me be candid, Republicans really have no power in Washington, D.C. right now. We have unified control of the government in the hands of the Democrats. All we have is messaging. The principal job of the conference chair is to carry the message of their fellow Republicans, and most of the members of the Republican conference don’t believe that Liz Cheney speaks for them, and so it is untenable for her to remain in the position of conference chair when you have most of the Republican conference saying in conversations with colleagues, that that they do not believe that she speaks for our team.”

When asked if any of his colleagues would be joining him, Rep. Gaetz had this to say:

“I’m traveling by myself on this trip, but I suspect that there will be several in Congress who share my perspective, who will be eager to see Liz replaced with someone who embraces the American first vision for our movement. ...I’m coming to talk about the failed leadership of Liz Cheney within our party, and the failed policies that she advocates for.”

Rep. Gaetz plans on being at the Wyoming State Capitol Building at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Rep. Liz Cheney’s spokesperson said she will not be available to speak this week, but encouraged Wyoming News Now to reach out next week for an official interview.
