CHEYENNE, Wyo. (RELEASE) - Around 3:00 PM Sunday, January 24 Casper Fire-EMS were called out for a structure fire in the 1000 block of South Cedar Street.

When firefighters arrived, they found a single family residence with smoke coming from the attic area.

Once crews entered, they found a fire in a fireplace chase that was extending into the walls and attic. The fire was brought under control within minutes of the first crew’s arrival.

Firefighters then worked to expose hidden spaces around the fireplace to assure complete extinguishment.

Two occupants of the home evacuated prior to arrival of firefighters. No injuries are reported. The residence had smoke alarms that were working properly.

The fire began in the structure surrounding the fireplace and chimney. Fire investigators are continuing to work to determine the exact cause. Damage was limited to the immediate area around the fireplace and some structure in the attic. There was also light smoke damage to the remainder of the residence.

The area of damage will be closed up and the occupants will be able to return to the residence.

In all, six CFEMS units initially responded along with Chief Officers. Crews were assisted by Wyoming Medical Center, Casper Police and Black Hills Energy.

Again, Casper Fire-EMS would like to emphasize the importance of working smoke alarms in your home. Check them regularly for proper function.
