Prep Athlete of the Week: Matt Pietsch
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Matt Pietsch is a swimmer from Cheyenne Central High School.
The junior placed first in a combined seven events in the Indians’ two meets last week and for that he is Wyoming News Now’s first 2021 Prep Athlete of the Week.
Those placements are particularly impressive because of the competition level that Central faced.
The Indians’ first meet was against Lander, a 3A powerhouse that has won 24 consecutive state titles.
When talking with Matt and Central Head Coach Josh Bott, one thing is clear.
Pietsch came into this season a man possessed.
“He did a lot of self-training, which doesn’t happen very often and, if it does, it’s not normally very successful,” Bott said. “It’s hard to do that hard training on your own and it’s obvious that he put a lot of time in in the offseason. He’s looking really good.”
Matt was clearly ready to step up and make sure that he was one of the best swimmers on the team.
“It’s a really hard grueling season,” Pietsch said. So, I really wanted to make sure that I was prepared to be in shape when [the season] started so I could get better throughout the year. And I really wasn’t happy with how last year ended so I wanted to make sure this year didn’t end the same way.”
Last year the Indians were 4A State Runner-Ups, losing to now three-time reigning champions Laramie.
It’s clear that taste of defeat burned a fire into Matt to get better and the motivation is definitely working.
Congratulations to Matt Pietsch, Wyoming News Now’s Prep Athlete of the Week.
