LANDER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -

The City of Lander has hired a new interim police chief, and today was his first official day on the job, but he’s certainly not new to the community. Interim Police Chief Ron Wells served on the Lander Police Department before the mayor appointed his current position.

Wells stated, “I’ve got a pretty good grasp of our department and the people in this department, and their wants and needs, so it could be a good fit for sure.” However, that’s not the only reason he would be a good fit for this placement in the department, he’s also worked under six police chiefs, and in turn, gaining the experience to get him through any situation.

“I’ve been through this agency, this is where my home is, these are truly like family members, so being able to help them, help the department, and help them grow, is a goal,” Wells noted.

Chief Wells is anything but new to his field, as he has been with the Lander Police Department for 19 years, and has been a sergeant for the last 11 years, but any new job on the first day is a learning curve. “It’s pretty nerve wracking, the nice thing with the interim is that it does give me a chance to get my feet wet and try it.”

Interim Chief Wells has been a first line supervisor, field training officer, and most recently a sergeant, coming up through the ranks of he L.P.D, and said he’d consider the full time position if given the opportunity.

“If it’s something that I think is a good fit for me, the mayor, the city, and the department, then I would be open to doing this position full time.”

Interim Chief Wells will remain in his interim position until a permanent placement is opened up to the public, and filled.
