UW Cowgirls basketball gets buzzer beater win in Laramie

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - University of Wyoming Basketball is back on the hardwood. Jaye Johnson’s tip-in to beat the buzzer downs the Fresno State Lady Bulldogs 65-63.

Johnson, played in just her second game as starter, she rained a pair of threes and hit the glass for three rebounds. Johnson scored 8 points and her last bucket would be the biggest moment of the contest.

Fresno State jumped out to a lead in the game through the first half leading 36-31 going into the break. The Bulldogs lead from start-to-finish in the opening 20 minutes in Laramie.

The Cowgirls applied pressure in the 3rd quarter keeping it close, and that would set the stage for the Lady Pokes to have a dominant 4th quarter outscoring their opponents 21-14.

Sanchez Ramos had a solid contribution to giving the Cowgirls the lead late in the 4th quarter. The game went back and forth as the Cowgirls zeroed in on the home stretch, FSU’s Haley Cavinder hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 9 seconds left in regulation. Cavinder led FSU with 28 points on 11-of-20 shooting including 4-of-5 from distance.

“Against Fresno you got to make shots and there was a couple of stretches tonight where we made some shots and then there were a few times where we were able to create some layups in defensive transition where we made a great play. I thought everybody today gave us good, quality minutes,” said Coach Gerald Mattinson.

According to University of Wyoming, FSU shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59) from the floor and went 7-of-18 (39 percent) from 3-point range and made 6-of-9 at the free-throw line. The Cowgirls shot just 38 percent (24-63) from the floor but made 11 3-pointers in the win and missed just one free throw while going 6-of-7 at the line.

Weidemann led the way offensively for the Cowgirls as she scored 16 points and drained a season-best four 3-pointers.

In the final moments of action, Jaye Johnson snagged the offensive board off a Quinn Weidemann missed 3-pointer and as time expired Johnson put the icing on the cake with the up in.

The Cowgirls have now won three consecutive games. UW faces Fresno State again Monday at 6:30 p.m from Laramie, Wy.
