Optimum Vitamin D levels crucial for overall health--difficult to achieve in winter

High quality supplements and food sources could help

RIVERTON, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -

Vitamin D is widely known to be crucial for overall health, impacting bone density and calcium absorption. However, a few lesser known impacts are cardiovascular related, positively affecting the heart and its functions. It has also been shown to benefit moods, thereby helping fight those winter blues.

Dr. Faubion, of Healthsource Chiropractic in Riverton, stated, “Especially in Wyoming and in the winter, it’s really hard to get enough from just being outdoors so we do typically recommend trying to find good food sources, which are somewhat limited, or of course quality supplementation can make a big difference in your Vitamin D levels.”

If you choose to supplement, however, experts say it’s important to make sure there aren’t dangerous additives and oils in the vitamin. Dr. Faubion noted that some of the healthiest oils to appear in the vitamin ingredients are olive oil or high quality sunflower oil.

According to Dr. Faubion, food sources are limited in Vitamin D, but a few good options with some of the vitamin present are from egg yolks, ocean fish including salmon, and even mushrooms.
