Prep Athlete of the Week: Lawson Lovering
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Wyoming News Now’s last 2020 Prep Athlete of the Week hardly needs an introduction.
Standing at seven feet tall, Central Boy Basketball’s Lawson Lovering is this week’s honoree.
In two games last week (wins over Kelly Walsh and Riverton), Lovering averaged 15 points, 12.5 rebounds, and two blocks.
But perhaps what is most interesting is his passing skill and court awareness.
Lovering had eight assists (4 per game), a stat you would not necessarily expect from a big man in high school.
“I could have a good shot, but there could be also a great shot available for my teammates out there,” Lovering said. “So, I’m always looking for those guys because I know I’m gonna get doubled a lot in high school.”
This skill, added to his dominance in the paint, has prompted comparisons to a Denver Nuggets star.
“He’s a young [Nikola] Jokic and he’s a guy who’s gonna make the play whether it’s for himself or for his teammates,” Central Boys Basketball Head Coach Tagg Lain said. “[He’s] very unselfish.”
Lawson is heading to Boulder to play basketball for the Colorado Buffaloes after high school.
He said his plan is to play in the NBA, but Coach Lain said he is the kind of guy that works hard in the classroom, just like he does on the basketball floor.
Therefore the sky is the limit for the senior.
Congratulations to Lawson Lovering, Wyoming News Now’s Prep Athlete of the Week.
