The Midwest girls basketball team prepare for season with new head coach
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -
The Midwest girls basketball season is kicking off this weekend and with their new head coach.
“I was really nervous as things kind of started to tighten up, restrictions started to tighten up again, I was like “oh no, we are not going to get to play”, and I was so excited to be the head coach,” said Midwest girls head basketball coach Starla Powers. “You know, I have been the assistant for some many years I was like I’m not going to get a chance but it turns out we get to have a season and I’m really excited.”
Powers has served as the girls assistant basketball coach for six years and has been teaching at Midwest for seven years. Powers said their schedule has been reworked due to COVID and they are no longer doing overnight tournaments. They are still excited for the opportunity to play basketball this season.
“For instance this weekend we are going to Guernsey on Friday, and then we are going to play back to back games on Saturday against Hanna Elk Mountain and Rock River so we are still getting three games in and even more than that really with the JV girls playing as well, so some girls are going to get a lot of playing time this weekend but I think it is good to get our feet wet and just dive in,” said Powers.
The oilers will play their first game of the season at Guernsey on Dec. 11.
