RIVERTON, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -

Toy drives are underway all over the state, and Fremont county is doing their part to help families in need this Christmas as well.

The Wind River Transportation Authority (WRTA) is utilized to transport people all around Fremont County, but around this time of year, they’re also collecting toys to share with kids all throughout Riverton. The bus that they typically drive around to fill with toys to give away, is seven feet longer this year.

“This year we’ve got a brand new bus, and it’s a really big bus, and we’re making a personal challenge to Fremont County to fill our bus with toys for the kids,” stated Gary Michaud, WRTA manager.

If you visit the Riverton Chamber, or head to their website, https://www.rivertonchamber.org/, you can sponsor a bike for a local child for $50.

“We know it’s a really unique year so a lot of people are struggling, but there’s some other people that are doing well. The people that are doing well, I challenge you to go out and help others who need help this year, whether it’s stuffing the bus or helping the food banks, or the many other ways that you can help your neighbor,” added Michaud.

Although the toy drive has gone on for many years, this is the first year a bike drive has been in conjunction. It came about due to an inventory mix-up. Wal Mart called the chamber and offered bikes at a very discounted rate, in order to make the best of the mistake.

“The sponsorships haven’t been in effect very long, and the fact that we already have 48 bike sponsorships is truly amazing. The community has really banded together to make sure that we’re providing for the kids in our county, and not just with this but with everything, the toy drive is underway,” noted Ashley Strickland, executive director of the Riverton Chamber of Commerce.

The bus travels to locations around town, and people show up to place their donations on the bus. The volunteer fire department delivers the bikes and toys near Christmas.

“WRTA is a very service focused organization, all of our employees love making a difference. We’re glad to be a part of this, we’re glad to help the people of Fremont County with their different needs, their transportation needs and anything we can help with. I definitely think people can accomplish the goal of stuffing the bus this year,” emphasized Michaud.
