Alpine skiers began practicing for the 2020-2021 season on Nov. 23 and will have their first race come January.

Last year the Natrona County boys took 4th at state and all five varsity athletes will be returning this season. The NC girls took 3rd at state last year and four varsity girls are returning. Even though mother nature hasn’t given us much snow, the athletes have been doing a lot of dry land conditioning which is important for the sport.

“Depending on how long the course is, it could be anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute long, and you are just going as fast as you can really, and just always have, we call them lung burners, you know by the time you get down you are just fighting for air, as you get through the finish, you are breathing hard, legs are burning, screaming at you, and even though it is two runs a day per race, it really wears the kids out,” said NCHS Alpine Ski Coach Michael Miller.

The first race of the season will be on Jan. 8 and 9 at Laramie.
