Vitalant testing blood for COVID-19 antibodies
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The holiday season is a slower season for blood donors with everyone busy thinking of gifts for family and friends. Vitalant is hoping people spend some time to help others in a couple of different ways.
Brooke Way, the Vitalant communications manager, said there is a COVID-19 antibodies test done with every successful blood donation.
“Convalescent plasma is from people who have already had COVID-19. They are helping people fight the virus with the convalescent plasma because it gives the patients extra antibodies to help fight the disease,” Way said.
Vitalant has cancelled 15 blood drives in Wyoming and about 2,000 across the U.S. Way adds people still need blood transfusions.
One recent goal is making sure people feel comfortable donating.
“We are checking temperatures at the door and disinfecting everything that donors might be touching. Our staff and donors are asked to wear masks,” Way said.
The last day to get a five dollar Amazon gift card is Dec. 1.
