University of Wyoming gives libraries around the state receive grants to create mini-makerspace

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Libraries across the state have received grants from the University of Wyoming to create mini-makerspaces. Four libraries (Laramie County Community College (LCCC) Ludden Library & Learning Commons, Natrona County, Evanston, Pinedale) have each received a $35,000 grant from UW as a part of the $175,000 Wyoming Department of Workforce Services Division of Vocational Rehabilitation fund received by makerspace partners at the University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Science’s Innovation Wyrkshop.

“For those who are just new to the experience and want to gain really valuable work skills, that’s where these makerspaces shine,” UW Makerspace Coordinator, Tyler Kerr said.

The mini-makerspaces are being created to assist people reach their future endeavors through technology. For LCCC, they plan to use this as an opportunity to create employment opportunities for disabled college students.

“I think that this is a great initiative for LCCC, I think this is definitely a step in the right direction,” Associate Dean of the Ludden Library, Elizabeth Dill said.

“For those individuals who maybe don’t have a lot of experience in the working world and have difficulty holding down employment, or for those who are just new to the experience and want to gain really valuable work skills, that’s where these makerspaces shine,” Kerr said.

The university is still looking for a fifth place to donate the final $35,000 grant they have available.
