CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - A Casper woman is hoping to form a connection with community members and people in nursing homes. She started a Facebook group called Casper Pen Pal Connection.

Shawnee Walter, the admin of the group, said she saw people community members communicating through the windows at a Casper nursing home and wanted to do something about it.

“I came up with the pen pal idea and it’s so awesome. One post on Facebook blew up,” Walter said.

Walter said she has a handful of people writing letters now but is hoping for more. “I’m so thankful there are so many people reaching out willing to do it,” Walter said.

The people getting care in nursing homes aren’t the only ones getting the letters.

“A lot of the facility’s employees have had such a rough year since they’ve been working over hours and wanting to be a part of this,” Walter said.

The Facebook page is how she’s keeping everything organized. “I update all of the guidelines for each nursing home addresses and the protocol for how you’re wanting to address your pen pal,” Walter said.

She added it’s been a lot of work, but is making it happen.
