Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne prepares to close its mart, focus more on home delivery program
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Though the pandemic has forced Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne to distribute its meals differently, it continues to feed almost 300 clients in need through its contactless delivery program on a weekly basis.
“Not only are our homebound clients more susceptible to social isolation but also food insecurities, and so to be able to continue to provide them at least one dietician approved meal, allows us to ensure at least we’re providing that nutritious meal and we can also help to avoid the social isolation,” said Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne Executive Director, Meg Kylander.
Kylander said the contactless delivery is also fulfilling part of their mission: making sure clients stay home safely. She said Meals on Wheels will also be offering more delivery days in October and plans on getting back to hot meal delivery.
While the organization focuses on its home delivered meal program, after next week its mart will no longer be open.
“The purpose of the mart when it was established 14 years ago was to help offset the cost of the home delivered meals program, and it has done that, it has served us well for a number of years. When we realized our focus needed to shift back to the meals program alone, the tough decision was made to close the mart Sep. 30,” said Kylander.
Kylander said with their remodeled kitchen, they can serve as many as 700 meals a day, and look forward to the future needs they can fulfill for the Cheyenne community. She also said Meals on Wheels will be looking to rent the mart space out to help cover the costs of meals. Kylander also said grants and donations are what keep Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne going.
Kylander also said Meals on Wheels would like to thank the community and their donor’s support during the pandemic.
Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne’s Mart will be open Wednesday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. until Sep. 30. For more information, you can visit Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne’s website here.
