CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and Hill Music Company awarded a Shoshoni teen with a new trumpet Saturday.

Keegan Thacker won a statewide instrument giveaway essay contest.

“I entered this competition because I really admire music and music’s always been a part of me,” he said.

Thacker was selected from a pool of more than 30 applicants.

“Every year it is a really hard choice but this year it was pretty clear cut. Keegan obviously has a passion for music,” Wyoming Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Rachel Bailey said.

She said the goal of the program is to help young Wyoming musicians advance their careers.

Thacker said he wants to use this trumpet, which is a major step-up from his previous one, to go into music therapy.

“I’ve always been a fan of music but I’ve also been a fan of science,” he said.
