CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - People tested for COVID-19 at the Casper-Natrona County Health Department (CNCHD) will soon also be tested for the seasonal flu.

The health department sends its swabs to the state lab, which will soon test each swab for both viruses.

The lab had recently started testing for both viruses but had to pause those tests Tuesday due to a supply shortage. Wyoming Health Officer Alexia Harrist said the lab is now only testing swabs for COVID-19.

Once the lab starts testing for both viruses, it will help determine why someone is sick.

“A lot of the symptoms of COVID-19 can mirror a lot of things including the seasonal flu so it’s really important that we’re ruling out possibilities and determining what the cause of illness is,” CNCHD Public Information Officer Hailey Bloom said.

She also said it’s important people get the flu shot starting in October.
