Casper City Council forms group to create massage therapist licensing ordinance
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Casper City Council members want to hear from massage therapists on how to license the profession.
They’ve decided to create a group, chaired by Councilman Steve Cathey, Ward III, to determine what a licensing ordinance should look like. The group will include massage therapists who practice in Casper.
Though the city and state don’t currently license the industry, massage therapists said they want it as it brings legitimacy to the profession and protects the client.
“Say someone comes in after a car accident and their neck is injured, you don’t want to go into someone who is not professional and not licensed and have them manipulate that neck. They could potentially make whatever injury it is worse,” massage therapist Savannah Wilkinson said.
She said a licensing requirement would also recognize the year of schooling she went through to become a massage therapist. In school, she had to learn about the body and massage techniques.
For those who don’t join the group discussing the ordinance, the city has opened a portal on its website, Casperwy.gov, to hear from the public.
