Taking over The Cheese Barrel has been dream come true for new owner
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Cheese Barrel began as the Blue Bird Grocery store in the late 1920′s and became what its called today in the late 1970′s.
“The Cheese Barrel has been in my life for almost 30 years. My dad was part of a group of gentleman from the class of ‘49, they used to sit right over there and every Saturday morning we knew where my dad, and everybody was from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. This is a dream come true, I’ve always wanted this building and without trying to cry, I can’t believe that it’s happening,” said The Cheese Barrel owner, Jacquie Anderson.
But it’s not just the history that brings people into the restaurant, it’s the experience.
“We have four gentleman that come in the morning and they sit at that table, and before they’re there, we have the table set up. It’s all about that, it’s about that connection and feeling like you’re welcomed.” said Anderson.
Anderson was blindsided like the rest of us as the pandemic made its way into the community and The Cheese Barrel was closed for three months. Some were worried the restaurant might not make it, but it had its soft opening in early July.
“Everybody was like oh no, The Cheese Barrel’s closing down and I was like, I think we need to keep The Cheese Barrel significant because people wanna hold on to their history, especially now,” said Anderson.
Something Anderson said her restaurant is lucky to have is 100 percent capacity available. Most safety guidelines are forcing restaurants to operate at 50 percent capacity.
“The advantage we have is that we are open at a six foot distancing all the way around the building, and that gives us 100 percent occupancy automatically,” said Anderson.
Anderson said she feels for the restaurants that aren’t so lucky and asks the community to understand what local restaurants are going through. She is excited for what the future holds for The Cheese Barrel and for the first time, the restaurant is open every day of the week.
