CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -The cancellation of Gillette College and Sheridan College’s sports programs have forced some athletes to de-commit from those schools, which leaves them to alternate their plans for the next year or two. One of those athletes is former Cheyenne East girls basketball forward, Madison Blaney, who originally committed to play basketball at Sheridan College. With the cut of their sports program, she de-committed and decided to continue her basketball career at Western Nebraska Community College.

“My first initial thought was kind of shocked because Sheridan and Gillette, their community runs through sports and it was kind of shocking that that happened,” Blaney said.

She mentioned that the coaches at Western Nebraska CC were a big influence on her decision. Blaney said she was told that the coaches will make sure she is valued and supported by the team and the community. With the high school basketball season being cut during the state tournament due to the pandemic, she’s eager to get back into competition.

“Western is a super competitive JuCo (Junior College) team and I think it’s going to be so much fun, new experiences and just getting back on the court,” Blaney said.

Blaney plans on majoring in Animal Science.
