American Disabilities Act celebrating 30 years
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - In the month of July, the Americans with Disabilities Act will celebrate its 30th anniversary. Emily Shuman, the deputy director of the Rocky Mountain ADA center said they want to help remind everyone that the ADA is there to protect people.
“Right now we are focused on awareness of the law itself. You’d be surprised how many people aren’t aware they have protections under it,” Shurman said.
She added that it’s beneficial to know because 60 percent of people are likely to acquire one with age.
“It’s more than likely that it will directly impact you or a loved one,” Shuman said.
Austin Berlin, Chair of Casper’s Council of People with Disabilities, said she wants to remind people to treat people in the disabled community like an equal.
“Just treat them like their regular people who have the same desires, goals and needs as everybody else,” Berlin said.
She added she’s happy the ADA is celebrating 30 years and hope it is enforced so everybody has their needs met.
